The Hydra Syndrome.
Work And Responsibilities.
Fiction was my escape to reality when I was younger and as such I'm familiar with a lot of myths and legends. Prominent among the myths of this world are the Greek myths. From the Pantheon of the Gods to creatures unbelievable, I like the detail in the mythological structure. Enough with the back story.
The Hydra is one of the famous creatures in the Greek mythology, intentionally created by Hera to kill Hercules, the snake had a special ability, for every head that was cut off, two more grew in it's place. This made it almost impossible to kill, but Hercules killed it at the end, anyways that's not the point of my story.
As far as I am concerned, every single person in this planet suffers from the Hydra syndrome, this syndrome according to Olúwanífẹ́mi Mátànmí (2025), is a situation where after it seems like a particular task or goal has been achieved, two more come in to take its place. In simple terms, there was a time when I just wanted to write Common Entrance Examinations and that was it. After the exams though, I found out that I had to write BECE- also know as Junior WAEC- three years later. After that again, I had to deal with new subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Literature, Further Mathematics!! and I was still supposed to take SSCE in another three years and this time I was to write UTME -also known as JAMB- as well.
Like they say, since KG 2 make person never rest! Ahhh.
This is just a preview of how life is, when you think you have gotten to the summit, you discover that there's yet another mountain to climb. If peradventure you decide to be lazy and not climb it, soon enough, you'll see that everyone has left you behind and you'll have no chance but to climb it.
You cut one head, two more grow in it's place that's the pattern to life. It's a cycle of cutting the head of the hydra as they grow, and if you don't cut them, you'll be eaten alive.
Someone said these words to me a while back, “the reward for good work is even more work". So, my message is clear, it isn't going to get any easier, responsibilities and expectations are just going to keep increasing, that's why you always need to keep up.
The world is moving fast, but you need to move faster.
Come next week, I'll share how to keep up and overtake the speed of the world.
Yours in Hydra Syndrome,
A Radical Stranger.
Perceived Ignorance: That life gets easier as you get older.
Probable Cure: Life doesn't get easier, you just have to get better.
